Breast Augmentation Recovery

During the first three days, women who have had children report that the discomfort feels like when their breasts were fully engorged with milk after childbirth. Women who have not had children describe the feeling as some tightness, burning or pressure. Dr. Eisenberg prescribes medications that will make this recovery period manageable for you. Three-quarters of our patients report no nausea and vomiting from the day of surgery on; the rest report minimal symptoms.

It's important to “listen” to your body. If, for example you vacuum the living room before your body is ready, you will be sore. That's your body's way of telling you that you aren't quite ready for that level of activity.

You can shower the day after surgery. It’s best to have someone stay with you following surgery, so that you can rest. If you have small children, you will need help lifting them for the first few days.

By the third day, many patients are able to comfortably lift their children and drive a car – if they are not taking narcotics. More than 90 percent of my patients are back to work on the fifth day, if they work in an office setting, longer if their work requires lifting, pushing or pulling. Patients can generally return to aerobics in two to three weeks and upper body weightlifting in six weeks. Sexual activity should be curtailed for one week following surgery. Wait a while before going bra shopping; it takes about eight weeks before you'll fit better in a bra.

Within a few days of your surgery, Dr. Eisenberg and the hospital will call you to check on your well-being. Your first postoperative visit is usually within a week. Your stitches will dissolve, so there are no stitches to remove at this visit-or ever. Patients generally return for rechecks at three weeks, six weeks, three months and nine months, if possible. All of these visits are included in your cosmetic surgery fee.
